Due in theaters TBD in 2018, the untitled Han Solo pic is part of the developing series of Star Wars spinoffs fleshing out the Galaxy Far, Far Away that also includes this December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Like Rogue One, Han Solo will dig into the saga’s backstory, detailing the early adventures of the character before he met Luke Skywalker, helped break Princess Leia out of an Imperial jail, and joined the Rebel Alliance during the events of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Glover will play the character originated by Billy Dee Williams in 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Acharming, slippery former professional gambler and smuggler who, by the events of that film, has somehow become the owner of the vast mining settlement called Cloud City, Lando goes on to become a pivotal figure in the Rebellion. Details about Han Solo‘s story are not yet known, but it’s widely assumed that it will lay out the precise relationship between Lando and Han only hinted at in Empire. Among the known backstory details, Lando, formerly a close friend of Han Solo, was the original owner of the iconic starship the Millennium Falcon before losing it to Solo in a game of cards. (Which is implied, though never stated outright, to have contributed to the decline of their friendship.)

Glover joins Alden Ehrenreich, announced earlier this year to play the younger version of Han Solo in the film, which is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Miller weighed in on the casting soon after it was announced:

Glover created and currently stars on the FX series Atlanta, starred for four seasons on Community, and received a Grammy nomination for his 2013 hip hop album “Because The Internet,” under the name Childish Gambino. He’s repped by WME, MGMT Management, and attorney Lev Ginsburg.
