Born in 1934 Rodgers grew up in a Bahamas that was still a British colony. He played cricket and had never even seen a game of baseball before he went to tryout for the San Francisco Giants minor league farm system in 1954.

Rodgers’ minor league career soared and he became a minor league superstar before playing eleven seasons in the major leagues for the New York Giants, the San Francisco Giants, the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Playing during the era of violent racial struggles in the 50’s, and the Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s.  Andre lived in two worlds, the sleepy British Colony known as the Bahamas and a tumultuous America. Rodgers led by the example of his gentle disposition and taught many of his American counterparts how to deal with racism while successfully navigating the baseball fields of America.
