Steve McQueen | The Film That Lit My Fuse

The Film That Lit My Fuse is a Deadline video series that aims to provide an antidote to headlines about industry uncertainty by swinging the conversation back to the creative ambitions, formative influences and inspirations of some of today’s great screen artists.

Every installment asks the same five questions. Answering those questions today is Steve McQueen, just as the BBC One in the UK and Amazon Prime Video elsewhere unveil Small Axe, a series of five films that McQueen directed about the experience of Blacks of West Indian descent in London, with all of the racism that came with it. McQueen is a Turner Prize-winning visual artist who burst on the Hollywood scene as a genius filmmaker showing the unbreakable spirit of an Irish hunger striker in Hunger, and the horrors and cruelty of antebellum slavery in 12 Years A Slave, the latter of which won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. He also made Shame with frequent collaborator Michael Fassbender, and Widows with Viola Davis and Liam Neeson.

You’ll be surprised which film lit his fuse, but know that it is available for viewing on Amazon Prime if you want to check it out.
