Synopsis: Lelia Cooper, a beautiful African-American violin prodigy, is the daughter of a washerwoman and a drunkard. One day, after having lost his pay gambling, Lelia’s father arrives home intoxicated. When her mother refuses to give him the money he has demanded, he smashes his daughter’s violin over the hard-working woman’s head. Lelia’s younger brother intervenes and he, too, is severely beaten. When the boy, whose pay the father also tries to take, flees and the father chases him, the father is run over and killed by a speeding truck. Lelia eventually triumphs over her surroundings and finds love and success.
