…Sundance/Kickstarter Panel on Strategies for Reaching & Engaging Black Audiences

from Shadow & Act | Tambay Obenson

Taped earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Kickstarter hosted a panel that included speakers I’m sure many of you are familiar with, including director Stanley Nelson (“The Black Panthers: Vanguard of a Revolution’), as well as director Dawn Porter (“Trapped”), and Marie Nelson (PBS), Dolly Turner (The Turner Group) and Sonya Childress (Firelight Media).

This informative panel explores strategies for reaching and engaging black audiences from festivals to theaters to broadcast and beyond. The panelists gave case studies using their individual projects (Nelson’s “Black Panthers” and Porter’s “Trapped”), and discuss how to leverage online platforms (e.g., social media, Kickstarter, Tugg, etc) and grassroots strategies to reach target audiences.

It should be useful and current information for filmmakers reading this blog. It’s especially good to hear from other black filmmakers on these issues – veteran filmmakers who’ve had success – as well the distributors/exhibitors and marketers that have worked with these filmmakers and their films.

Moira Griffin (Sundance Diversity Initiatives) moderated the panel.
